Bridge Creek Elementary teachers Annette Dake and Rachell Skeen are the recipients of the first K20 Center Innovative Educators award. Each were presented with a plaque and a $750 check at the 2009 K20 Winter Institute.

Dake and Skeen were nominated for the Innovative Educators award for their successful integration of technology and service learning into the classroom.

The teachers were team leaders for successfully applying for a $65,000 Oklahoma Educational Technology and Trust grant that involves using multiple types of technology in cross-curricular, cross-grade lesson study teams. They also created a video production class for elementary students that evolved into Bridge Creek TV, a daily television program broadcast throughout the school.

As Service-Learning coordinators, the teachers’ work with Learn and Serve Oklahoma involved students interviewing veterans and submitting those films to the Library of Congress. They organized the community and students of all ages to make and decorate lap quilts for the veterans in the Oklahoma City VA hospital.

The Innovative Educator award is an annual award presented at the K20 Winter Institute. The winners are Oklahoma teachers selected from peer and school administrator nominations.
